Cashmere goats are to be found in nearly all the countries of central Asia: Tibet, Mongolia, China (almost everywhere but mainly in the provinces of Xinjiang, Yinghai, Ningxia, Hebei, Shanxi, Shan Xi, Shang Dong, Liang Ling), Afghanistan, Iran, Nepal, Pakistan, India and Turkey. They’re also found in the Asiatic regions of the former Soviet Union, ie. Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikstan, Kazakistan, Kirgigstan. A small number can still be found in Australia and New Zealand.

No official sources exist and nobody knows the exact quantity of cashmere that the world produces.

The following figures are the result of detailed research and input from specialists in this sector, often at odds with each other.

It is estimated that the People’s Republic of China produce about 8 to 10 million kilos of greasy cashmere, of which approximately 3 million kilos are used in the local textile industry.

-

The People’s Republic of Mongolia however produce 2.7 to 3 million kilos of greasy (1.5 tons of prime quality and 1.3 to 1.5 tons of secondary quality) of which, it is estimated, about 1 million kilos are smuggled into China. The dehearing cashmere production is reduced in this way to 1,000 tons.

-

Iran and Afghanistan produce a combined quantity of 400 to 500 thousand kilos of dehairing cashmere.

The cashmere produced by the Asiatic regions of the former Soviet Union (Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikstan, Kazakistan, Kirgizistan) is not overly famous, as Europe and the rest of the world do not buy directly from these countries.

The lack of direct contact renders production difficult to quantify.

The commercialisation of these products occurs through new means, created after the countries’ independence from the USSR in 1991. Previously, trading occurred only through the channels of COMECON, while today most of it goes to China. The estimated production of these countries is around 2,000 tons of greasy.
Together Pakistan, Nepal and India produce about 800 tons which in turn becomes 160 to 220 tons fo dehairing cashmere. The amount produced by Turkey, New Zealand and Australia, however, is negligible with a total not more than 60 to 80 thousand kilos of dehairing cashmere.

-

Total production can therefore be estimated at approximately 15 to 18 thousand tons of greasy, which corresponds to around 5,500 to 7,000 tons of dehairing cashmere. This represents 0.2% of the fibre produced on the planet.
